About acne scar treatment

Acne scars are dents left in the skin after inflamed acne heals. Clinics describe three main types: rolling scars, wide and shallow with sloping edges; boxcar scars, with sharp edges and a flat base; and ice pick scars, narrow and deep.

Under many scars, bands of scar tissue pull the skin down. One clinic says these bands start to form in the first month and harden over 6 to 12 months. One face often has more than one type, so clinics usually combine methods.

Techniques and approaches

The same procedure name covers different operations. These are the approaches a clinic will offer, and what separates them.

Fractional laser

Fractional CO2, Fraxel and Fotona lasers resurface the skin and stimulate collagen. One clinic says a laser alone may not lift a scar that bands hold down.

Subcision

A needle or a blunt cannula is passed under the scar to cut or loosen the bands. Clinics say it suits rolling scars best.

Injections

Fillers or collagen stimulators are placed under the scar, often after subcision. One clinic injects CO2 gas with hyaluronic acid.

TCA CROSS

One clinic treats narrow, deep ice pick scars one by one with TCA CROSS or a punch technique.

The decisions you will make

These come up at consultation. Knowing them beforehand makes the conversation shorter and the plan clearer.

Which scar type

Ask the doctor which types you have. Each responds to a different method.

A combined plan

Two clinics say subcision alone may not be enough to rebuild collagen, and advise adding a laser or an injection. Ask for the price of the whole plan.

Who should wait

One clinic advises postponing it with active acne or infection, a bleeding problem or blood-thinning medicine, a history of raised scars, or pregnancy.

About 1 day

What the trip involves

Clinics vary, and your clinician’s plan overrides anything on this page. The shape is consistent.

  1. 1Before you fly

Subcision sessions are one to three months apart, so more than one session means more than one trip.

  2. 2Assessment

A doctor examines the types of scar and plans the treatment, often a mix of methods.

  3. 3The session

Numbing cream or a local injection first. One clinic says subcision takes 30 to 60 minutes.

  4. 4The first weeks

Bruising after subcision clears in about 7 to 10 days at one clinic, which advises avoiding strong sun, scrubs and other lasers for a week.

  5. 5Result

Scars swell for the first month, so one clinic judges the result after about eight weeks.

  6. 6Back home

Use sunscreen every day. One clinic says it lowers the chance of dark marks.

Ask these before you pay a deposit

Formatted as a numbered list, ready to email a clinic.
  1. Who is treating me, and what are their qualifications?

A clinic name is not a clinician. Ask for the individual, their registration, and how often they do this procedure.

  2. What is included in the price, and what is not?

Facility fees, anaesthesia, materials, medication, follow-up appointments and take-home items are often quoted separately.

  3. Is the deposit refundable, and under what conditions?

Including if the clinic reschedules, or if the in-person assessment changes the plan.

  4. What if it needs correcting?

Ask for the policy in writing: who pays, within what window, and whether it covers a return trip.

  5. Who do I contact after I go home, and in what language?

A name, a channel, and an expected response time. Aftercare that ends at the airport is not aftercare.

Questions

Is the price on this page a quote?

No. It is a starting price for one session. The doctor sets the plan after seeing your scars.

How many sessions will I need?

Clinics advise one to three subcision sessions, one to three months apart, often with a laser.

Will the scars go completely?

Not always. Two clinics say scars may not disappear completely; treatment makes them shallower.

Is there any downtime?

Bruising after subcision can last 7 to 10 days. One clinic says the small bumps from its gas and hyaluronic acid injections settle in two to four weeks.

Can a visitor get the hospital price?

The three hospitals' prices are for Thai citizens and foreigners living in Thailand. Ask what you would pay.
