Starting price onlyFrom 2,500 baht at one clinic, depending on size, colour and number of tattoos. The page does not say whether this is per session.

The hospital's tattoo rows do not say whether they are per session; other rows on the same list do. It also prices eyeliner, 12,500 baht for upper and lower lids by PicoWay, and lip tattoos. The arm and leg prices are a promotion, and the page does not say how large an area is.

How many sessions, and how far apart

One clinic says most tattoos need at least three sessions before they clearly fade, about one to two months apart. Another says eight to ten sessions on average on one page, and three to ten or more on another, four to eight weeks apart. One clinic sells courses of five and ten sessions, which cost less per session.

Clinics say the number depends on the size, colour, depth, age and place of the tattoo. One says black is the easiest colour to remove and red the hardest, and that amateur tattoos are harder than professional ones because the ink sits at different depths. One clinic uses a 1064 nm laser for black and blue ink and 532 nm for red.

Healing, aftercare, and who should wait

Numbing cream goes on first. One clinic says the redness darkens for one to two days and may weep a little, fades over three to seven days as the scab dries and falls off, and the skin is back to normal in one to two weeks. Another says swelling, redness and small scabs settle in about five to seven days. Clinics advise keeping the area dry for 24 hours to two days, not picking or popping blisters, and avoiding the sun.

Before treatment, clinics advise no alcohol, aspirin or other blood-thinning medicine, fish oil or vitamin E, one for at least a week. One says a new tattoo must be at least four weeks old; another advises waiting one to two months. One clinic advises against treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a tendency to keloid scars, on blood-thinning medicine, or with an open wound or infection in the area. It says the back and chest scar more easily, and that laser near the eyes for eyeliner tattoos can harm the retina. Another clinic says poor technique can cause scars, patchy marks, uneven skin colour, burns or infection.

Check who treats you

Only a doctor registered and licensed by the Medical Council of Thailand may practise medicine (Medical Profession Act 1982, section 26). Two of the clinics say a doctor does the laser. Ask for the name of the doctor who will treat you, and check it on the Medical Council's website by searching their first name and surname, in Thai or in English. It lists only licensed doctors. If you find nothing, the Council answers on 02-590-1887.

No one may present themselves as skilled in a field of medicine unless they hold the Medical Council's certificate for it, or one the Council recognises, or meet criteria set in the Council's regulations (section 28).

What to ask before you pay

  • Which laser will you use, and is the price per session?
  • How do you measure my tattoo, and what is the price for its size?
  • How many sessions do you expect, how far apart, and what does a course cost?
  • Does any colour in my tattoo cost more or take longer?
  • What is the doctor's full name?
