PGT-A embryo testing in Bangkok: who qualifies, what it costs, and the rules

In Thailand, embryo testing is not a free choice. It is allowed only in the cases a Medical Council rule lists, and never in a way that could choose a baby's sex. Check whether you qualify before you compare prices.

What PGT tests for

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) checks embryos made by IVF or ICSI before one is transferred. A few cells are taken from each embryo, usually at day 5 or 6, and sent to a genetics laboratory. Thai rules recognise two purposes:

  • screening embryos for chromosome abnormalities, known as PGT-A;
  • diagnosing a genetic condition already known in the husband or wife, often called PGT-M.

Matching an embryo's tissue type (HLA) to a sick child is also allowed, under the conditions below.

Who may have embryo testing in Thailand

Embryo testing is governed by Medical Council announcement 95(5)/2558, made under the Assisted Reproductive Technology Act 2015. As with IVF itself, it is for a legally married husband and wife. It is allowed when:

  • the husband, the wife or both carry a genetic abnormality that could pass to the baby, with a clear risk of a disease, carrier status or a condition the child could not survive or live normally with;

or, for a couple with no known genetic abnormality, when one of these applies:

  • a previous pregnancy where the baby had a serious disability, disease or abnormality that embryo screening could prevent;
  • a child with a serious illness that a stem-cell transplant from a tissue-matched donor could treat (HLA testing);
  • two or more miscarriages before 12 weeks, or a test showing that an earlier miscarriage was caused by a genetic abnormality in the baby;
  • the wife is 35 or over and there is a medical indication that the embryos may be at genetic risk;
  • two assisted reproduction cycles in a row without a pregnancy.

Age alone is not one of the listed cases. If a clinic recommends PGT-A, ask which of these applies to you, and keep the answer in writing.

Choosing a baby's sex is banned

The rule says embryo testing must not be done in any way that could be understood as choosing the sex of the baby. A clinic offering "family balancing" or gender selection in Thailand is offering what the rule bans.

What the rule requires of the clinic

  • Explain the steps, the risks of treatment and of embryo testing, and the possible complications, before you start.
  • Have both husband and wife sign a written consent to the testing.
  • Use a laboratory that meets genetic-testing standards.
  • Give genetic counselling before testing and again with the results, covering how accurate the test is, its limits, and your choices.
  • Follow up the outcome of the pregnancy or miscarriage.

The clinic also reports every case to the Department of Health Service Support once a year. The report includes the patients' names, nationality and ethnicity, the reason for testing, the method and the results.

What embryo testing costs in Bangkok

On 1 and 2 November 2026 we read the PGT-A prices that Bangkok fertility centres publish on their own websites:

What you are buyingPublished prices
PGT-A priced per embryoAt one centre, 39,900 baht for the first embryo and 15,900 baht for each further embryo, until 31 December 2026. Testing four embryos at that price comes to 87,600 baht.
PGT-A with embryo freezingAt one hospital, 96,000 baht for two embryos, until 31 December 2026.
PGT-A inside a packageOne package that includes testing up to four embryos values the testing at 80,000 baht.
A full IVF or ICSI cycle with PGT-A299,999 to 498,000 baht at four centres. The packages test from 2 to 8 embryos.

Testing is charged per embryo, so the bill depends on how many embryos reach day 5 or 6. Ask whether the price includes the biopsy, freezing the tested embryos and the frozen transfer: some packages leave the transfer out, others include one.

At least one package with PGT-A is limited to Thai nationals and residents of Thailand. Ask whether the price applies to you.

How testing changes the trip

Tested embryos are frozen while the laboratory works, so the transfer happens in a later cycle. That makes PGT-A a two-part plan: one stay for stimulation, egg collection and biopsy, and a second, shorter stay for the frozen transfer.

If no embryo is suitable to transfer, the second trip is not needed, but the first cycle is still paid for. Ask how many embryos the clinic usually expects to test for someone with your age and test results.

Tested embryos stay in Thailand

Thai law bans anyone from buying, selling, importing or exporting eggs, sperm or embryos. Embryos tested in Thailand cannot be shipped home, so plan every transfer at a Thai clinic, and ask what yearly storage costs once any included storage ends.

What to ask before you pay

  • Which of the cases in announcement 95(5) applies to us?
  • Is this PGT-A, PGT-M or HLA testing, and which laboratory does it?
  • What does testing cost per embryo, and is the biopsy included?
  • Is freezing, storage and the frozen transfer included, and for how many embryos?
  • When will we have genetic counselling, and with whom?
  • Is this price for my nationality and residency, and until what date?
