The first clinic's own pages give two different full prices for both lips, 15,999 and 20,999 baht; its promotional price, 13,999 baht, is the same on both. The second says its promotional prices may change, and that its upper-lip price excludes add-on techniques. The third is a chain with branches outside Bangkok, and gives one price list for all of them.

The fourth clinic also offers cupid's bow filler instead, at 14,900 baht for 2 cc.

What the operation involves

The doctor draws the planned shape, then trims tissue from the lip under local anaesthetic: numbing cream, injections at the lip and, at two clinics, a nerve block. One clinic says the operation takes 45 to 60 minutes, another one to two hours. The stitches sit on the inside of the lip, and you go home the same day.

Clinics say removing lip tissue is permanent and hard to correct afterwards. For lips that are already thin, they say the doctor must judge carefully how much can be removed, and one recommends filler instead. One clinic says existing filler should be dissolved before surgery.

Swelling, stitches and recovery

Swelling and tightness are worst in the first three to four days. The stitches come out at one to two weeks (one clinic says at 14 days), and clinics say the lip settles over one to three months. They give anything from three to fourteen days of recovery. One clinic says doing both lips swells more than the upper lip alone, and that a firm lump can form in the scar after the second week, which gentle massage softens.

Before surgery, clinics advise stopping vitamins, supplements and aspirin-type or blood-thinning drugs for two weeks, and not smoking or drinking alcohol. Afterwards they advise soft food, a small spoon or a straw, cleaning the wound with saline, little talking at first, and no hard exercise for about two weeks.

Clinics list a scar or a raised scar, a shape that is hard to change later, and infection if the wound is not cared for. One warns that removing too much can leave the lips too thin or unable to close fully.

Check who treats you

Only a doctor registered and licensed by the Medical Council of Thailand may practise medicine (Medical Profession Act 1982, section 26). Two of the clinics name their surgeon, one with a licence number. Ask for the name of the doctor who will operate, and check it on the Medical Council's website by searching their first name and surname, in Thai or in English. It lists only licensed doctors. If you find nothing, the Council answers on 02-590-1887.

No one may present themselves as skilled in a field of medicine unless they hold the Medical Council's certificate for it, or one the Council recognises, or meet criteria set in the Council's regulations (section 28).

What to ask before you pay

  • Is the price a promotion, and what is the full price?
  • Is it for the upper lip, the lower lip, or both?
  • Can I see the planned shape drawn before surgery?
  • When do the stitches come out, and how long should I stay?
  • What is the surgeon's full name?
