Whole-face programmes25,000 baht for a PDO V-shape programme, and 50,000 to 129,000 baht for a full-face PCL programme, at one clinic.

The clinic that charges from 3,999 baht a thread says a usual first session is four to six threads, which is 15,996 to 23,994 baht. The clinic with the lowest prices lists four fine threads for the nose, the brows, between the brows or the folds beside the mouth at 4,999 baht each, as promotions.

PDO, PCL, and how many threads

Clinics name threads by their material. One clinic says PDO threads last about four to eight months and PCL threads about 18 to 24 months. Another says the effect of its PDO programmes lasts 6 to 12 months and of its PCL programmes 12 to 24 months.

One clinic says most faces need about three to ten threads a side, which the doctor decides, and that more is not always better: too many threads can overlap and raise the risk of scar tissue. It warns that offers of 1,000 to 2,000 baht can mean low-quality or fake threads, or a person who is not a licensed doctor, and says the threads should be approved by the Thai FDA.

The session, and the days after

One clinic says a starter session takes 30 to 45 minutes and a full-face programme 60 to 90 minutes, under local anaesthetic. It says the face feels tight for five to seven days afterwards, to eat soft food for the first week and to avoid facial massage for four weeks. The hospital lists no hospital stay for it.

The same clinic says its prices include the anaesthetic, photographs, a follow-up within 24 hours and one touch-up at three months if needed, and that other clinics may charge for these separately. It says to wait two weeks after botulinum toxin and four weeks after filler before a thread lift.

Check who treats you

Only a doctor registered and licensed by the Medical Council of Thailand may practise medicine (Medical Profession Act 1982, section 26). The three clinics say a doctor does the treatment. Ask for the name of the doctor who will treat you, and check it on the Medical Council's website by searching their first name and surname, in Thai or in English. It lists only licensed doctors. If you find nothing, the Council answers on 02-590-1887.

No one may present themselves as skilled in a field of medicine unless they hold the Medical Council's certificate for it, or one the Council recognises, or meet criteria set in the Council's regulations (section 28).

What to ask before you pay

  • Which thread is it, and what is it made of: PDO, PCL or another?
  • How many threads, and is that for one side or both?
  • Is the price per thread, or for the whole programme?
  • Are the anaesthetic, follow-up and any touch-up included?
  • Is the thread approved by the Thai FDA, and will the pack be opened in front of me?
  • What is the doctor's full name?
