Per unit and by brand

The hospital charges 230 baht for each extra unit of the Korean toxin and 370 baht of the American. One clinic's prices by area work out at about 200 baht a unit.

Another clinic sells a whole vial, priced by brand:

BrandPublished price for one vial
Aestox, 100 units6,500 baht
Neuronox, 100 units7,500 baht
Nabota, 100 units8,500 baht
Dysport, 120 units14,500 baht
Xeomin, 100 units15,990 baht
Allergan, 100 units17,990 baht

The hospital sells a vial of the Korean toxin for 15,600 baht. Units are not the same from brand to brand: the clinic that sells Dysport sells it in vials of 120 units. Ask which brand you are getting, how many units go into each area, and to see the vial.

When it works, and how long it lasts

One clinic says the first changes show in three to seven days and the full result in about 10 to 14 days. It says the result lasts three to four months, or six to ten months for underarm sweating, and advises not repeating it more often than every three months. Another clinic says 100 units last three to five months, and to wait at least four to six months before the next treatment.

There is no time off: one clinic says you can go back to work straight away, but asks you to stay upright for four hours and skip exercise for 24 hours. Because the result takes up to two weeks to settle, have it early in your trip if you want the clinic to check it before you leave.

Check who injects

Only a doctor registered and licensed by the Medical Council of Thailand may practise medicine (Medical Profession Act 1982, section 26). One clinic says a doctor injects every case. Ask for the name of the doctor who will inject you, and check it on the Medical Council's website by searching their first name and surname, in Thai or in English. It lists only licensed doctors. If you find nothing, the Council answers on 02-590-1887.

No one may present themselves as skilled in a field of medicine unless they hold the Medical Council's certificate for it, or one the Council recognises, or meet criteria set in the Council's regulations (section 28).

What to ask before you pay

  • Which brand is it, and can I see the vial?
  • How many units go into each area, and what does an extra unit cost?
  • Is the price per area, or for a whole vial?
  • Is a follow-up check included, and when?
  • What is the doctor's full name?
