Breast augmentation places an implant to increase volume and change shape. It is done under general anaesthetic and typically takes one to two hours.
The words cover a wide range of operations. An implant alone is a different procedure from an implant with a lift, and the two are priced and recovered from very differently.
The same procedure name covers different operations. These are the approaches a clinic will offer, and what separates them.
The implant sits above the chest muscle, behind the breast tissue. Shorter recovery, but less soft-tissue cover over the implant.
The implant sits behind the pectoral muscle. More cover and a different upper-pole shape, at the cost of a more uncomfortable early recovery.
A hybrid: partly behind the muscle at the top, partly behind the gland lower down. The most common approach in current practice.
In the fold beneath the breast. Direct access and the most widely used route.
Around the lower edge of the areola. The scar sits at a colour border; the route passes through breast tissue.
Through the armpit, using an endoscope. No scar on the breast; more technically involved and generally more expensive.
Uses your own fat rather than an implant. Limits how much volume can be added in one session and does not create the same upper-pole shape.
These come up at consultation. Knowing them beforehand makes the conversation shorter and the plan clearer.
Silicone gel, cohesive gel, or saline. Each behaves differently to the touch and in the event of a rupture.
Implants are chosen by base width and projection, not by cup size. A responsible consultation measures rather than guesses.
If the nipple sits below the fold, an implant alone adds volume without correcting position. That is two procedures.
Practice has moved substantially towards smooth in recent years. Ask what the surgeon uses and why.
